The Richmond County Courts serve as part of Virginia’s 15th Judicial District. These courts consist of a Circuit Court, a General District Court & a Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court. These are all trial courts. Each Court has its own Judges and its own specific jurisdiction. The Richmond County VA judges preside over a variety of cases all unique to the jurisdiction of their particular court. The Richmond County Circuit Court is the trial court with the broadest powers and also hears cases appealed from the district courts. The right to trial by Jury is only in the Richmond County Circuit Court. The Richmond County General District Court hears the most cases due its traffic violation jurisdiction.

Terms of Richmond County Circuit Court and General Information
- Terms begin on the 4th Monday of January, April, July and October.
- All cases set by agreement with Commonwealth’s Attorney at preliminary hearing, on Term Day, or by agreement of counsel and the Court. The latter may be done by a telephone call to the Judge’s office at 804-580-4006.
- Court convenes 9:00 a.m.
- In civil jury trials, instructions must be submitted to the Court and opposing counsel 5 days prior to trial.
- Commissioners in Chancery are utilized in general chancery causes and divorces.
