These courts consist of a Circuit Court, a General District Court & a Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court. These are all trial courts. Each Court has its own Judges and its own specific jurisdiction. The Halifax judges preside over a variety of cases all unique to the jurisdiction of their particular court. The Halifax Circuit Court is the trial court with the broadest powers and also hears cases appealed from the district courts. The right to trial by Jury is only in the Halifax Circuit Court.     Terms of Halifax Circuit Court and General Information

    • Grand jury meets 1st day of term & term days are the 1st Thursday of each month.
    • Docket call days will be the 1st Thurs. of every month beginning Feb. 5, 2015. If the docket call day falls on a legal holiday, then docket call shall occur the following Thursday.
    • Civil cases set by written request; email is preferred. Send request to twfisher@vacourts.gov.
    • Commissioners in Chancery are utilized in general chancery causes, except divorce.
